I found this great intro guide to making fringes! I am taking an entrepreneurship class at art college right now and it's got me thinking about the cost of making things. If you have ever made art or crafts for sale, you're not alone in getting burned in shipping costs and more :\ I love knitting machines and have three of them. They bring the cost of production down a lot, but knitting and crochet are all labour.

I made one shawl that took 7.5hours, and, if I pay myself, minimum wage, would cost $115. I tried a different cast on and cast off method for a second shawl, ensured the needles were well-lubricated and the second one took me 5 hours. The actual knitting was three. Attaching a fringe took two hours. Someone on the Ultimate Knitting Machine group suggesting using pre-bought fringe and I like that idea. But, it also caused me to explore a few other ideas and I came across this concise guide with great pictures for adding fringe to your clothes and projects.

Hello craft superstars! Did you know that glass baubles can be heat embossed? Yes, they can. And I've made an Instructable to prove it.

Hello one and all! It's been years since I've been here, but I made a thing and need to show off, and that's harder to do in person these days. So here it is:
I made myself a pair of spatterdashes. You may prefer the term 'gaiters', but 'spatterdashes' is just such a nice word to say! I use the long form, instead of 'spats', because... well, they're long. They sit just below the knee.
I made them from a torn pair of jeans and they're lined with purple fleece. Toasty, I can tell you that. I'm pleased as punch with how they turned out.

Some pictures? Some pictures!

Today in my art class I learned about I learned about a thermoplastic called Fosshape. There's a bit of a learning curve ahead, but I was blown away by how cool it is. There's also another product made by the same company called Wonderflex. The best part is that I can buy it at a theatre shop in my end of town even though it's a bit pricey. I'm not sure if I'll use it as part of my project, but it certainly could come in handy down the road!

Hi peeps, if you missed my last video, I bought an Ultimate Sweater Machine. These can still be purchased new, but I understand that they are no longer being made. You might strike out and find them in a thrift store! Anyway, I decided to keep a diary since these machines were around for decades, but also notoriously cranky, hee hee!

I have made two projects on it so far. Stay tuned!

Hi peeps, I'm excited to share this news. I already have two large and one small Addi knitting machines and I finally sprung for another hobbyist machine. The Ultimate Sweater Machine.

The Ultimate Sweater Machine is the one that got away. Years ago I could have bought one with a Michaels 50% off coupon, but it seemed large and unwieldy and I wasn't sure I had the space. Now I have the space and the need--this thing will come in handy for my classes too. I'm a fibre major and next year, or at least for fall, my classes will be online.

The reviews are mixed, but according to the Knitting for Profit blog, one needs just the right touch to work the machine. This has been my experience with the Addi machines and even a toy machine that I had. You'll have problems if you go too fast or hold the yarn too tight.

I saw a used one on Kijiji (like Craigslist) for $50 and it re-ignited my interested. $50 would be an absolute steal! However, the seller failed to mention if it still worked or had all the parts. They took a while to get back to me and it turns out that it has all the parts but they never confirmed that it worked. It seemed easier to go brand new. There were older knitting machines on FB Marketplace as well, but they were also "as is". Might as well spend the money once and do it right instead of having to wrangle parts.

Do you have a knitting machine?

I don't knit with needles--I have two Addi knitting machines and no shortage of knitting looms (sometimes called knitting rakes). It's very quick and easy and you can still do fun stitches.

I just learned about this contraption and I'm not sure if I'll be saying happy birthday to meeeeee with it :-D I saw that some people use cable ties to affix their other looms onto the top. Still, intriguing IMHO!

I love Animal Crossing (and right now, who doesn't?). This artist combines electronics, Amiibos and deco to make adorable little AC sculptures.

Just wanted to share this--one of my homework projects will be to 3D print a fabric sample. Yes, we can do that at my art college :-D We'll be using Tinkercad, which is free to use.

I thought this was a neat idea - create a blanket based on the temperature for a random effect.

As a card maker, I find it hard to describe what I'm trying to make. This person has collected a list of fun fold cards, their names and some examples to clarify things!

This video caught my eye because the thumbnail showed someone ironing toothbrushes. What? Oh, you wacky YouTubers!

I can't say how well some of the ideas work but it's a fascinating video to watch as an iron and wax paper quickly become a motif for the different ideas.

This is the first of two posts about crochet and cockatiels and both kind of happened at the same time. I was at a holiday market this weekend and just happened to be across from a vendor named Jubblier and she had crochet budgies and a cockatiel. You can bet I bought one of each! They are as just as cute as they are on their Etsy listing.

My real tiel wasn't so sure about the imposter :-D

Hi friends, here's the shawl that I was working on in October. I finished it up recently. The yarn is called Copenhagen and the colour is Shooting Star.

I made it on my Knifty Knitter knitting loom. I e-wrapped three stitches and then skipped a peg to make a ribbed pattern. This resulted in a neat cloud-like pattern on the back as well.

I can share this now :-) I made it back in summer for an LJ friend (who is not on LJ so much anymore) for their birthday. However, I thought I would send it from the US when we went to Seattle because it would be cheaper, faster or delayed through customs. I packaged it up but then had a change of heart - what if was pulled aside when it was scanned? So, it went off in the mail once we returned home and it was well received.

The yarn I used is James C. Brett marble chunky. This yarn is light, colourful and good yardage for the cost. IIRC, it took three balls to make and it was knit on a knitting rake by hand.

I have a lousy cold, but I was able to sit down and make some thank you cards. I wish I could have invited someone over, but I don't want to pass this germ around.

Spare Pepper is a none-too-bright looking plush rendition of our cat Pepper. I made him out of a fake fur jacket when my partner was in hospital; there was a distinct lack of cats in that place. Ever since he came home, Spare Pepper has been sitting around looking plump and fuzzy and not doing a whole lot else, in a stark contrast with real Pepper, who does all kind of things including catching mice, making funny sounds and getting in the way.
I figured it might be time for Spare Pepper to embark on a new career. And I had a bag of leftover fish tank pebbles, and a piece of cotton from a pair of trousers that has been made into shorts. So now Spare Pepper is a doorstop. And a pretty good one he is.

Picture of a stuffed plush cat who is also a doorstopper.

As you can see, he's giving it his all. That door is not going to budge an inch as long as he's there.
