Candy Jar Terrarium Part 2: Plants

This post covers planting the candy jar terrarium. Begin with Part 1: Setup.


I used TopFin Granular Activated Carbon for the charcoal layer. This will absorb odors and keep the water clean as it cycles through the terrarium.




I spread a thin layer of charcoal over the coconut mat.




This is the terrarium substrate that I mixed up previously.




I spread about 1 inch of terrarium substrate over the charcoal layer.




This pot holds several polka dot plants of various color combinations.




This is a fern.




I placed both plants inside the jar.




I got to test out the new scoop trowel that I found recently. It's better suited to moving potting soil than the kind designed for digging holes.




I filled in around the plants with Miracle Gro Organic Choice Moisture Control Potting Soil with Compost. It's pretty good stuff.




Here is the jar with the potting soil filled in around the plants.




I went outside to gather some moss. At this time of year, it's in sad shape, surrounded by wilting violets. It should perk up with water, though.




Here is a closeup of the moss.




I dug up two chunks of moss, each a little smaller than my hand.




I wedged the moss in around the plants. It's harder to do with its soil so rigid; normally moss is floppy, but it hasn't rained here in well over a month.




Looking inside the jar, you can see the arrangement of plants.




This kind of water bottle makes it easy to direct water into a terrarium.




You can see the water creeping down the sides of the jar. I'll probably need to add more later.




This is the finished terrarium.
