Joann Fabrics closing all locations—including Illinois stores

Weeks after announcing the closure of 500 stores, Joann Fabrics announced it will be closing all of its 800+ locations.


I posted about this on my blog earlier, and it sparked a big conversation, so I figured I should pass the word in craft communities too.

I plan to go to ours tomorrow, although word is that all remaining items have had the prices jacked up so that the "discounts" are basically the same price.

Super upset about this. Mine was one that was supposed to be staying open, so I thought I'd have more time. I've got the anxiety of knowing this is my last chance to get fabric other than quilting cotton unless I want to buy way more yardage than I need (and sight unseen), but I don't have any projects planned and there's nothing I can think of that I don't already have the stuff for, so I just am sitting here numbly watching it go

My sympathies.

I recommend that people go to say goodbye to a beloved place, if nothing else. Also, ask around other crafters there to see if anyone else is thinking about launching a cooperative, buying club, or new fabric store. There are opportunities amidst the loss, and it will be easier to find each other before the doors close forever.
